Free avatar makers,
actually checked for free.

Every avatar tool calls itself free. Far fewer stay free once you hit download. We build the same avatars in each maker, take the export as far as the free plan allows, and report what came out the other side — watermark, resolution, and usage rights included.

The hook

"Free" is doing a lot of work on those landing pages

The word covers four very different promises, and a tool can keep one while quietly breaking the other three. Here is what we check on every free tier before it earns a spot in the gallery.

Watermarks

Free with a logo baked in

Plenty of makers hand you a finished avatar with a badge stamped in the corner — or a faint tile across the whole image. It is still free, but it is not clean. We note exactly where the mark lands and whether removing it costs a one-off fee or a subscription.

Export limits

Free until you hit download

A tool can be free to use and still gate the file. Common walls: 256px exports only, PNG but never SVG, a cap of three downloads a month, or a transparent background reserved for paid tiers. We record the real ceiling on the free plan.

Usage rights

Free to make, not always free to use

Personal-use-only terms are common. If you want the avatar on a storefront, a client project, a book cover, or a monetized channel, some free tiers simply do not grant that. We read the license and say plainly what you are allowed to do.

Accounts & data

Free in exchange for a signup

Some makers work with no account at all; others need an email, a social login, or photo uploads that get retained. We flag what a tool asks for before it lets you export, and whether uploads are used for model training.

How we test

Same brief, same wall, every tool

A short version of the method. Nothing here depends on a vendor relationship, and no tool can buy a place on the board.

  1. 01

    Sign up with nothing

We approach every maker the way a first-time visitor does — no paid plan, no press access, no promo code. Whatever the free tier gives the public is what we score.

  2. 02

    Build the same three avatars

A friendly profile picture, an illustrated character, and a plain headshot — identical briefs in every tool, so style range and part libraries compare fairly.

  3. 03

Push it to the export wall

We download at the maximum the free tier allows and record the real file: dimensions, format, transparency, and any mark left on the image.

  4. 04

Read the license, not the landing page

Marketing says "free". The terms say what you may actually do with the result. We take the answer from the terms and quote the limit that matters.
